  1. ** MAGICK 11 -- PSYCHIC ENERGY **
  2.  
  3.         We have seen in the theories of magick, that there
  4. is a definite relationship between the 'inner' and 'outer'
  5. worlds. We saw this in the theory of the microcosm and the
  6. macrocosm; in the four worlds; in the theory of
  7. correspondences; and also in the Cabala and Tree of Life.
  8. This relationship between inner and outer is very important.
  9. And it means quite simply that success (or lack of it) in
  10. one world (inner or outer) influences success (or lack of
  11. it) in the other. Therefore developing of magical ability
  12.        
  13. is more than meditation and magical practice, for it
  14. implies mastery of the four worlds. The developed magician
  15. is not only master of the inner worlds; he is also master
  16. of himself.
  17.         This is not to imply that successful magicians are
  18. all millionaires (or whatever standard people measure
  19. success by), but it should mean that they are basically
  20. pleasant people, at least; no serious hangups. The developed
  21. magician is described as a 'king' in the Book of the Law.
  22. This means simply that he has full control over all aspects
  23. of his physical and inner life. He should be who he wants to
  24. be, doing what he wants to do.

  26. PLANETARY CORRESPONDENCES
  27.  
  28.         The *numbers* in the tables and diagram of the
  29. preceeding lesson on Cabala are the 'key' numbers which we
  30. find in various *correspondence tables* (such as Crowley's
  31. '777'). One important set of correspondences for the planets,
  32. is shown below...

  46. Notice that we have included the metal which is associated
  47. with the planet, as well as common attributes of each
  48. planet. The theory of Cabalistic magick is to select the
  49. appropriate planet for the desired result. The attribute
  50. column will assist in that selection. Once a particular
  51. planet is determined, an entity is selected from the
  52. correspondence tables by matching the key number. A
  53. set of correspondence tables may be available on this
  54. board as a separate file (777.ARC). Additionally, a
  55. list of selected deities from several popular pantheons
  56. and with a brief description about them may be available
  57. on this board as GODS.LST.
  58.         Although Hebrew Mysticism is the original source
  59. of Cabalistic ideas, it is mostly unconcerned with the
  60. magical implications of those ideas. How can a religious
  61. philosophy which is monotheistic lend credibility to
  62. a polytheistic approach? Various deities are understood
  63. as *aspects* or *qualities* of the Supreme God. This
  64. is not a contradiction, merely a restatement of the
  65. microcosm-macrocosm idea once again. The Sefirotic
  66. Tree, in its representation of the universe is
  67. the Macrocosm. While it could be said that any
  68. single sefiroth has its own separate qualities, it
  69. remains, nonetheless, a part of the whole tree, and
  70. a part of the macrocosm. As a result, virtually
  71. any pantheon or belief system is compatible with
  72. the Cabala.

  74. WILLPOWER AND MAGICK
  75.  
  76.         Western magick has traditionally placed a great deal
  77. of emphasis upon the use of willpower as a means of
  78. development and self-mastery. But this may not be the best
  79. method in the long run. Isaac Bonewitz describes how the
  80. subconscious will sometimes rebel against willpower with
  81. 'spectacular results'. It is far better to run one's life
  82. democratically.

  84.         Hawaiian Kahuna magick describes the 'three selves',
  85. ie. the lower self (or subconscious), the middle self (or
  86. normal consciousness), and the high self (spirit or Holy
  87. Guardian Angel). Enlightenment in the Hawaiian system
  88. consists of unification of the three selves. They become
  89. 'buddies'. Enlightenment does not come from great change. It
  90. comes from great acceptance. Continual effort at becoming
  91. better takes you nowhere. For becoming it is not being it.
  92. The unification is achieved by first developing
  93. communication with the subconscious and later with the
  94. high self also. Simple exercises with a pendulum, automatic
  95. writing, raised finger responses, self hypnosis, recording
  96. and analysis of dreams etc. facilitate communication with
  97. the subconscious. At first communication with the high self
  98. must be via the subconscious, but later it is possible to go
  99. direct to it.

  101. PSYCHIC ENERGY
  102.  
  103.         Many occult groups follow an energy model for magick
  104. and the physical body. This model (or theory) equates
  105. psychic energy with kundalini/prana/sexual or life force
  106. energy. The ideal of kundalini yoga is thus to raise the
  107.        
  108. kundalini to the higher chakras (especially ajna and
  109. sahasrara) thereby enhancing psychic/magick powers. The
  110. release of psychic energy is also relevant to mental
  111. control, good health and longevity, and the attainment of
  112. 'cosmic consciousness'. Meditation and yoga is used to
  113. liberate psychic energy so that it can be used for magical
  114. purposes. But there are other ways to liberate psychic
  115. energy. Many of these techniques will act as a mental
  116. catharsis in the sense of invigorating the psyche and
  117. resulting in improved intellectual and physical performance. 
  118.         1) Psychotherapy of certain types which releases
  119. pent up psychological energy.
  120.         2) Overcoming mind games, hangups, and inhibitions.
  121. This is the basis of all listed practices, as hangups waste
  122. psychic energy. Certain psychotropic drugs may have this
  123. affect. Also the 'kicks' from 'risks' like skydiving.
  124.         3) Vigorous dance and physical exercise -- to the
  125. point of 'second wind'.
  126.         4) 'Desirelessness' and various religious practices.
  127.         5) The way of return, and various other mystical
  128. practices.
  129.         6) Atavistic resurgence. This last item deserves
  130. some extra mention. It was one of Austin Spare's methods.
  131. It means to contact the primitive emotions deep within the
  132. psyche. In a sense it is regressive. However, there is power
  133. there, if you are able to control it. 
  134.  
  135.         We have seen how magical theory is based upon the
  136. assumption that psychic phenomena is real. If this is so,
  137. then magick is also real. And we have also seen how magick
  138. is the art and science of causing change in accordance with
  139. the will by non-physical means. Magical philosophy is the
  140. working system of terms, theories, and symbols upon which
  141. magick is based. But magick goes further than that, for as
  142. an ancient system of psychology, magick may be used as is a
  143. means of self improvement and spiritual growth. For magick
  144. and mysticism are parallel paths, each ultimately leading
  145. to transcendence.
